Hmmm...

Perhaps I am a little over-sensitive to these things, but the HGTV show "I Want That!" comes off to me as a bit too close to a certain book I knew as I grew up:

Yep, that's right: The Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmies.

A cautionary tale my mother impressed upon me at the ripe old age of 4 (since, apparently, I had acquired a case of said "gimmies") It served to throw a few roadblocks in the way of my budding hedonism.

Because, I mean, who doesn't want to be like the Berenstain bears? Really? That's right, everyone does.

Don't get me wrong, I love new tech. I am generally glued to Engadget, Digg, and TUAW... but c'mon...

Can't the title of the show at least sound a little awe-struck, rather than like a grubby toddler in a shopping cart?

Pretty please?

That time of year...

So it's nearing the end of May... which to most people in my profession (education) means that a year is gradually coming to an end, much as a leaf might drift to the ground or a paper airplane gently glide to its rest.

Not for band directors.

Currently I am in the midst of one of our most stressful times of year - with concerts, auditions, planning, and year-end-inventory all staring at me like a pack of vigilante goblins in knock-off sunglasses.

To make matters worse, it's mostly gorgeous in Houston right now... which always makes me want to stop, wool-gather, daydream, dawdle, and other such creative things. That, sadly, will have to wait until sometime in June.

C'est la vie.

Off to watch some Narnia.

Good old escapism - you are my oldest, and truest, friend.

...

Lots going on right now - UH Invitational, Student Leadership training, that pesky thing called work...

Anyways - a question that's been bothering me... that I may explore here once the fun dies down... How can you teach music and "hate" any instrument in your ensemble. Bassett horn aside, are there any instrumental colors in modern wind literature that the composer treats as disposable?

Discuss. Both of you.

Night!
